They first indicated that the new third-generation MacBook Pro keyboard features a “thin, silicone barrier” to prevent small debris from impacting the performance of the keyboard. The fine folks over at iFixit teased the world last week, giving us a quick glimpse as what they’d be working on over the weekend. When Apple unveiled the new laptops, which come in 13- and 15-inch Touch Bar variants only (the non-Touch Bar models were not upgraded (yet)), they informed publications that the new keyboard was not specifically designed to address any of the complaints that have led the company to launch a repair program for the first- and second-generation butterfly keyboards. It offers plenty of the upgrades most MBP fans have been looking for, and it even includes the fastest SSD ever in a laptop.īut obviously there are a lot of questions that folks still have in a few key areas, including the third-generation butterfly keyboard. Basically, that means that many of the most critical components in the new MacBook Pro models are not user replaceable, making repairs rather difficult. The notebooks also retain the single-unit keyboard, battery, and speaker design. Of course, for all of the features added or removed from the refreshed Apple notebooks, there are still other components and design decisions that haven’t changed.įor instance, the CPU, memory, and SSD are still soldered down. The teardown site noted that the design of the heat sink hasn’t changed despite the new T2 addition. It offers increased security and encryption features and controls system management, image signal processors, and the audio and SSD controllers. The T2 chip houses the notebooks’ secure enclave and enables always-on “Hey Siri” capability. IFixit confirmed that the new MacBook Pro devices sport Apple’s upgraded T2 coprocessors. Interestingly, while the batteries are larger, the new MacBook Pros have not increased in weight. That’s a bump up from the 5 cell 196.7-gram battery that was installed in the previous generation of notebook.
